The project
From a tired square to a place to linger.
Castle Square has felt tired for a while, and we are breathing new life into it.
Working for Swansea Council, we're bringing back greenery, water and room to relax, right beneath the castle.
Green space grows from about a quarter of the square to more than 40%. Most of the existing trees stay, and new planting brings colour and wildlife back to the centre of the city.
It's a pivotal part of Swansea's wider £1bn programme to make the city a better place to live, work and visit.

A Big Screen to watch events
A large screen to watch sporting events, film nights and live events
The castle still kept in view
The design keeps clear sightlines of Swansea castle, tying the new square to its long history.
The Stone Pavillion
A second cafe built from stone, with an accessible green roof and terrace looking out over the gardens.
The Copper Pavillion
A cafe pavillion clad in copper with a planted roof you can visit. It's curved form nods to Swansea's copper smelting past.
A Water Feature to Play in
Fountains set flush into the paving at the heart of the square, ready for children to play and splash in on a warm day.
Improved landscaping & green areas
New lawns, biodiverse areas and more trees, bring colour, shade and wildlife back to the city centre.

Home to the grand Ben Evans department store, lost in the Three Nights' Blitz.

Laid out as Castle Gardens, a peaceful green space for the recovering city.
The 1990s
Now
Remodelled with hard paving, fountains and the amphitheatre steps we know today.
We're bringing the greenery back, this time for the next generation.
On site
Building with the city, not around it
A busy city centre doesn't stop for a building site, and neither should the people who use it. We will keep footpaths and neighbouring businesses open and accessible while we work, and we will keep disruption to a minimum.
The first foundations are in, the square has been dug to its new levels, and the work is running to programme, watched over by the castle.
