What is happening to Castle Square ?

We're giving it back its greenery. Working for Swansea Council, we're turning the tired square into a welcoming garden with new planting, a water feature, two café pavilions and space for events. It's part of Swansea's wider £1bn city centre regeneration.

Will the cafes take away public space?

Accepted Answer

No. You won't lose public space, and there'll be more green space to use than before. Green cover grows from about a quarter of the square to more than 40%.Both pavilions face south, have outdoor seating and planted green roofs, so they add to the greenery rather than replace it.

Why add café units when the city already has empty shops

Accepted Answer

City centres everywhere are changing, and it isn't only about shopping anymore. The pavilions give people another reason to visit, sit and relax in a quality space, and they support local food and drink businesses. Decisions about the units sit with Swansea Council.

Will I still be able to drive along Castle Bailey and Caer Street?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There are no planned changes to access for drivers or other road users on those streets.

Will we lose any trees?

Accepted Answer

Most of the existing trees are staying, and we're planting more. Expect more shade, more colour and more wildlife than the square has had for years.

Will the castle views be blocked?

No. The design deliberately keeps clear views of Swansea Castle, so the square stays connected to its history.

Can shops and businesses stay open throughout construction?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We will keep footpaths and neighbouring businesses open and accessible throughout, and we have planned the work to keep disruption to a minimum.

What is happening to the leaf boat sculpture?

Accepted Answer

It's been carefully removed and put into storage while a new home is found for it. Cwmdonkin Park, close to Dylan Thomas's childhood home, is among the locations being considered.

Will the square still host events?

Accepted Answer

Yes, more than before. A large screen above a bandstand-style stage, plus plenty of flexible open space, means room for match days, performances and community events.

The transformed square is due to reopen in the second half of 2027. Dates can shift on a project like this, so we'll keep this page updated as the work progresses.
